Oklahoma Youth Expo Important Changes & Reminders

CHANGES

Gates
All gates will close each night at 10:00 p.m. and will re-open at 8:00 a.m. People may still walk in and out of the gates; however, no animals will be allowed to enter the gates after 10:00 p.m. or before 8:00 a.m. All animals must have their health papers checked by an Oklahoma Department of Agriculture representative before entering the gates.

Premise ID Requirement
It is now required that all exhibitors of swine entered into any Oklahoma junior livestock show must have an official premise identification number. If the swine exhibit is kept at the school farm, no other premise identification is required. Click here for more information and to obtain a premise ID card.

Substitute Showman
Substitutions will only be allowed for the following reasons:
A. Two animals in the same class.
B. Conflicts with animals being exhibited in other species.
C. Sickness or a physical injury documented by a physician.
D. A pre-approved 4-H or FFA activity. No other school activity will qualify.

Steps to obtaining a Substitute Showman:
The following is the procedure, which is to be followed, to determine a substitute showman for all species at the Oklahoma Youth Expo. Once the exhibitor determines one or more of the abovementioned circumstances applies to him/her, the exhibitor will:

  • Obtain a Substitute Showman form from the Oklahoma Youth Expo Show Office or the Species Superintendent.
  • Identify another exhibitor exhibiting livestock at the Oklahoma Youth Expo in the following manner:
    • (a) Family Member: If a family member is not present and eligible then the exhibitor proceeds to step (b).
      (b) An exhibitor from the exact FFA Chapter or 4-H Club: If a member of the exhibitor’s FFA Chapter or 4-H Club is not present and eligible then the exhibitor proceeds to step (c).
      (c) An exhibitor from the exact county in which the exhibitor resides: If an exhibitor from the exact county in which the exhibitor resides is not present and eligible then the exhibitor proceeds to step (d).
      (d) Finally, an eligible exhibitor exhibiting at the Oklahoma Youth Expo.
  • Complete the Substitute Showman form.
  • Turn in form to the Species Superintendent for approval.

Heifers
Pay close attention to the Schedule of Events as a few of the heiferbreeds will be showing on different days and at different times. Commercial Heifers will show on the second day of heifer exhibition, Tuesday, March 16th, rather than the first day. Maine-Anjou heifers will now show on the first day of heifer exhibition, Monday, March 15th. Limousin and Shorthorn heifer times (not dates) have been adjusted as well.

All Sheep
All sheep must be stalled in assigned stalls in the sheep barn by 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17. Sheep MUST be STALLED by this time, not still unloading.

Sheep Classification
Only 4-H and FFA members exhibiting at the Oklahoma Youth Expo will be allowed to bring lambs into the classification ring. No adults, parents, etc. will be allowed.

Physcial Abuse/Striking Lambs
A physical abuse policy for all species is already in place at the Oklahoma Youth Expo. As a reminder, physical abuse to any animal is not and will not be tolerated. Particularly, the practice of punching, knuckling, slapping or, in any way, striking a lamb is not allowed. This will be monitered closely at the 2010 Expo with possible disqualification of exhibitor and animal.

Sheep Prolapse
Any visible prolapse in the show ring will automatically be disqualified by the show superintendent.

Market Lambs
All market lambs must be slick shorn, including the head, a maximum of 30 days prior to classification.

Breeding Sheep
All breeding sheep must be slick shorn. No wool is allowed above the knees or hocks. No wool cap on the head.

Exhibitors Must Have an Entry (General Rule #18)
All exhibitors who wish to show at the Oklahoma Youth Expo MUST have an on-line entry recorded in his/her name in order to be eligible to show.
Simply having a nomination in a student’s name is not sufficient, even if the student is included in a household/family nomination. ALL students MUST have at least one on-line entry in his/her name. In addition, a student will only be eligible to show the number of animals he/she has entered on-line. For example, an exhibitor who has two barrows entered on-line will only be eligible to show two barrows, even if a third barrow was household/family nominated under his/her name.

Animal Exhibition (General Rule #5)
Exhibitors may exhibit animals one time only during the Oklahoma Youth Expo. Animals may not be nominated or shown in more than one breed.

Injured Animal (General Rule #6)
When the judge determines that an animal can no longer compete without endangering itself, said animal will be disqualified, and the next highest placing animal in that class or preliminary sale order will be brought in to replace the disqualified animal.

Showing in Appropriate Weight Class (General Rule #7)
An exhibitor must show their animal in the appropriate weight class. In other words, if an exhibitor misses their weight class for any reason, the exhibitor is not allowed to move up to the next weight class.
